Parents are required to add five new immunizations for the upcominvg school year as a resulyt ofstate mandates. Metro Healty anticipates these requirements will affect upto 50,0000 students in the San Antonio area. Startingb Aug. 1, K-12 students will be required to take two doses of theVaricella (chickenpox) Students entering the 1-6 and 8-12 grades must continur to meet the current requirement. Entering 7th grade studentsa are required to take the one dose of the meningococcapl vaccine thisschool year. Students entering the 7th grade must havethe diphtheria, acellular pertussis-containing vaccine if they’ve not had the booste r within the last five years.
Students enterinhg grades 8 - 12 must have the boosterf shot if they have not had one in the last 10 Kindergarten students statewide are now required to take two doses of hepatitixA vaccine. Finally, K-12 students must take two doses of the measles vaccine and one dose each of the mumps andrubellqa vaccine. In addition to the expanded vaccinations, studente need to be current on previouslyrequired immunizations.
“These additions to the childhood immunization schedule will bring us closer in line with CDC recommendations and make Texasz an even safer environment for vaccinepreventablee diseases,” health director Fernando Guerra
